If you're applying for childcare jobs in BC, one question comes up fast: how do you actually get certified? Here's the full walkthrough.
If you're applying for childcare jobs in British Columbia, one question comes up fast: how do you get Responsible Adult certification, and how quickly can you actually finish it? Here's the process from start to finish.
There's no minimum age to take the Responsible Adult Course itself — anyone can complete the training. The age requirement applies to working as a paid Responsible Adult: you need to be 19 or older to be hired for a paid position.
There is one exception. A daycare or preschool owner can contact their licensing officer and request an exception, which can allow someone younger than 19 to work as a Responsible Adult in certain cases. This is decided case-by-case by the licensing officer, not guaranteed.
In practice, this means younger applicants can still complete the training now, use it toward volunteer experience, and be ready to work in a paid role as soon as they turn 19 — or sooner, if their employer requests and receives an exception. Beyond age, there are no other prerequisites — no prior childcare experience or education requirements. This makes it accessible whether you're entering the workforce for the first time, returning after time away, or new to Canada.
Responsible Adult training doesn't need to be a college or university course. It can be completed online, in workshops, or through community programs — as long as it covers at least 20 hours across child development, guidance, health and safety, and nutrition. Our Responsible Adult Course is a 25-hour, fully online, self-paced option that covers all required subject areas in a single course.
There are no set start dates. Once you enroll, you can begin right away, using any device — laptop, tablet, or phone. The course is also available in over 100 languages, making it accessible to ESL learners and newcomers to Canada.
Most learners complete the course in a weekend or across a few evenings. Because it's self-paced, you can log in and out as your schedule allows — there's no deadline pressure.
Once you've completed all course material, you'll take a final exam. Your certificate of completion is issued in English immediately after you pass — no waiting period.
Some students have the full cost of training covered through WorkBC funding, depending on their employment situation. It's worth checking with your local WorkBC Centre before you enroll independently.
A BC-recognized certificate of completion that qualifies you to work in school age group care, occasional child care, and as a short-term substitute for ECE assistants in licensed facilities — plus free access to our Home Daycare Course, in case you're considering opening your own family daycare down the road.
Complete your Responsible Adult Course online and receive your certificate upon successful completion. Study at your own pace and start immediately.
