Responsible Adult Certification Requirements

Who qualifies, what training covers, and how to get certified quickly online.

A lot of people find childcare job postings before they fully understand the Responsible Adult certification requirements behind them. Here's a clear breakdown of exactly what's required, and how our course meets each requirement.

Who qualifies

To work as a Responsible Adult in BC, you need to:

  • Be at least 19 years old to be hired
  • Be able to provide care and mature guidance to children
  • Complete at least 20 hours of approved training
  • That 19+ requirement applies to paid work — not to the training itself. There's no minimum age to take the Responsible Adult Course; anyone can complete it. One exception exists: a daycare or preschool owner can contact their licensing officer to request an exception, which can allow someone younger than 19 to work as a Responsible Adult in certain cases, decided case-by-case.

The training must cover child development, guidance, health and safety, or nutrition — either as a single course or a combination of courses that add up to 20 hours. There are no education prerequisites and no prior childcare experience required to take the training itself.

Certification vs. what employers look for

It's worth separating two different things: what's required to get certified, and what's typically required to get hired.

You do not need any childcare experience to enroll in or complete Responsible Adult training — the certification itself has no experience prerequisite. But most employers hiring for Responsible Adult positions will still want to see some relevant childcare experience on your resume, even if it's informal. This can include:

  • Volunteering with children
  • Babysitting or nannying
  • Coaching or mentoring youth
  • Camp counsellor experience
  • In other words: the certificate qualifies you to work in licensed settings, but pairing it with some hands-on experience — even informal — makes you a much stronger candidate to employers. If you don't have any yet, consider volunteering or babysitting alongside your training to build up your resume before you start applying.

    What the training must cover

Under BC's Child Care Licensing Regulation, Responsible Adult training must include the following subject areas:

  • Child development
  • Guidance & positive behaviour
  • Health, safety & nutrition
  • Understanding children's needs
  • Our Responsible Adult Course covers all of these areas across 25 hours of self-paced online training, so you're covered from start to finish in one course.

Is the training a one-time requirement?

Yes. The 20-hour training requirement is a one-time certification — there's no renewal or expiry. Once you've completed a qualifying course, your certificate remains valid.

Does the course have to be in-person?

No. Training can be completed in a variety of formats — online, in workshops, conferences, seminars, or classes offered through local recreation centres. Our course is fully online and self-paced, so you can complete it on any device, on your own schedule.
